NATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR MEDIA REFORM
The next National Conference for Media Reform will be held in Memphis, TN, on January 12-14, 2007. It is expected that thousands will participate in the meetings, including activists, media makers, educators, journalists, policymakers and concerned citizens. Anyone concerned about the state of the media and committed to work for change is invited. The program will have five core tracks: media policy; media literacy, critique & accountability, independent & noncommercial media; civil rights, social justice & media; and media reform activism. Among the scheduled speakers are Bill Moyers, Jane Fonda, Juan Gonzalez, Amy Goodman, Phil Donahue, Van Jones, Rev. Jesse Jackson (invited), Ben Bagdikian, Kim Gandy, Davey D, FCC Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, and Robert W. McChesney, whose organization--Free Press--is organizing the event.

The cost of attendance is $250 (or more, as volunteered) for supporting registration, $195 regular registration, and $95 for students, seniors, and lower-income activists.

CONSTITUTIONAL THEORIES OF MEDIA REFORM
"Reclaiming the First Amendment: Constitutional Theories of Media Reform" is the title of a January 19, 2007 conference at Hofstra Univ. sponsored by the Hofstra Law School and the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York Univ. School of Law. It will mark the 40th anniversary of Jerome Barron's influential HARVARD LAW REVIEW article on "Access to the Press-A New First Amendment Right." Prof. Barron will be the luncheon speaker. The all-day conference features panels on Media Regulation, Access and the First Amendment, Media Regulation and Intellectual Property, The Communications Order and New Technologies, and Proposals for Reform. There also will be an historical perspective on Justice Blackmun.
