NATIONAL MEDIA REFORM CONFERENCE
The fourth National Conference for Media Reform took place in June 2008 in Minneapolis. More than 3,000 people, from all 50 states and dozens of nations assembled to discuss what measures to take to improve media systems, especially in the United States. There was considerable optimism because of the victories already won in difficult waters in Washington, D.C. during the past two years. Expectations were high that a change in government resulting from the November 2008 elections would make the media reform job vastly easier. The key themes of the Conference were the need to address the disintegration of journalism as a viable institution; the need to prevent the telephone and cable monopolies and oligopolies from privatizing the Internet; the need to protect and expand non-profit and non-commercial broadcasting; the need to enhance local and minority ownership of media, and to dismantle the massive media conglomerates; the need to establish credible regulation in the public interest across numerous fronts. It is fair to say that this is the agenda of the movement going forward. In short, we need to create a media system where it is rational behavior for people to produce ethically and socially conscious material.
